Synopsis
Act 1
Agrippina, wife of Emperor Claudius, has received news that her husband has drowned at sea. She immediately sees her opportunity to place Nero, her son from a previous marriage, on the throne. She orders him to distribute grain and money to the people to reinforce his claim. Next, she summons Pallas and Narcissus, the emperor’s freedmen, and promises them her love in exchange for their support. Agrippina convenes the Senate to inform them of the sad news and to elect a new emperor. Immediately, Pallas and Narcissus chant the name of Nero.
Agrippina and Nero ascend the throne, but in the distance trumpet fanfares sound and Lesbo, Claudius’s right-hand man, enters the stage. He announces that the Emperor is alive thanks to the rescue operation of his general Otho. Otho himself also reveals that, out of gratitude, Claudius promised him the throne. Startled, the conspirators swear revenge. But Otho confesses to Agrippina that he loves the beautiful Poppea more than the throne.
Poppea begins to have doubts, moved by the genuine grief of her beloved. Otho finds her in her ‘sleep’ and hears her muttering accusations against him. He wakes her and tells her that it is all a Machiavellian plan by Agrippina. Furious, Poppea swears revenge on the Empress. At the same time, Agrippina decides to eliminate Pallas and Narcissus by playing them off against each other. She orders both of them to murder the other. Claudius, too, does not escape her intrigues. She assures him that Otho is still a danger as long as Nero has not been appointed successor. Claudius, too excited to see Poppea again, agrees.
Act III
Poppea has devised a plan to expose Agrippina. She has Otho hide while she arranges an ‘amorous’ meeting with Nero. Then Nero is allowed to hide as well, and the Emperor arrives. Poppea tells Claudius that it is not Otho, but Nero who wants her as his mistress. Bewildered, Claudius no longer knows what to believe. As proof, Poppea summons Nero. Seething with jealousy, the Emperor seizes the young Nero, who flees. Poppea fears Agrippina’s revenge, but Claudius promises to protect her and leaves. Poppea definitively reconciles with her beloved Otho.
Furious about Nero’s blunder, Agrippina demands that he renounce love for good. Meanwhile, Pallas and Narcissus attempt to turn the confused Claudius against Agrippina. They told him how she tried to place Nero on the throne during his absence. Agrippina herself insists that she only wished to secure the throne for the sake of her husband. Poppea, Otho, and Nero arrive, and Claudius accuses Nero of immoral behavior. Nevertheless, he decides to let Poppea and Nero marry and to grant the throne to Otho. However, Otho begs for Poppea’s hand in marriage. Thereupon, Claudius decides to give the throne to Nero. In the finale, the goddess Juno blesses the marriage between Poppea and Otho.
