For years, OPERA2DAY had dreamed of staging a production in the iconic Fish Auction Hall—one of the best-kept secrets of the Scheveningen harbor. Every day, freshly caught fish is brought ashore and traded here, at a location rightfully nominated as a national heritage site. Festival Classique made it possible to finally realize this production. In this unique setting, Schubert’s melancholic music came to life for an enthusiastic audience.
But the fish auction is not only a surprising venue for music theatre. It has also become a beloved location for pop-up dinners, which—under the name Zeevlam—pleasantly surprised the culinary world and earned rave reviews on the restaurant guide Iens. Together with renowned The Hague chefs Bart Nijhuis and Robin Collard, OPERA2DAY created a total experience, merging the world of the fishermen with Schubert’s finest music and exceptional seafood dishes paired with matching wines.
Schubert in Scheveningen tells a story built around Schubert’s music, which so often centers on fishermen and their wistful loves. At sea, far from their beloveds for long periods, you can almost hear them sighing the words Schubert set to music: “My heart is like the water, it knows storm and ebb and flow.” Baritone Florian Just and accordionist Marieke Hopman performed Schubert’s timeless and beautiful music, joined by the Eliot Quartet and a vocal ensemble.
Schubert in Scheveningen was a co-production by OPERA2DAY, Festival Classique, and Zeevlam.
The story
Fishermen sing drinking songs on their way to the canteen at the fish auction. When a fisher girl passes by, one of the men instantly loses his heart to her. But he also loses sight of her. The fisherman wavers between hope and despair. The inevitable fate of every fisherman follows: with a heavy heart, he sails away, out to sea.
