Amadeus was one of the major theatre hits of the season a few years ago. “Overwhelming... What a celebration!” wrote Scènes. “Virtuoso acting and sharp satire,” said de Volkskrant, and “brilliantly sung,” according to NRC. As a dream successor, director Theu Boermans now presents Mozart’s Zauberflöte – The Next Generation: an exciting and contemporary interpretation of Mozart’s world-famous opera Die Zauberflöte. Once again, it promises to be a sparkling theatrical and musical experience, performed with live choir and orchestra.

This full staging of Mozart’s masterpiece is the dreamed-of successor to the five-star reviewed Amadeus, which already featured opera scenes in a starring role. ‘What a feast!’ wrote Scenes. ‘The most beautiful scenes are those in which Mozart and the music play the leading role’ according to NRC, also ‘brilliantly sung’. ‘The insanely clever acting, Mozart’s music, the richly coloured staging are merciless and of an agonising beauty’ (Trouw). Scenes from Die Zauberflöte stole the show and made one long for a full performance of the work.

For this, Theu Boermans, one of our country’s most beloved and award-winning directors once again collaborated with musical director Hernán Schvartsman of OPERA2DAY. They were inspired by the intentions of Mozart and Shikaneder. A similar mix of actors and singers was cast and the libretto directly captures the imagination through a completely new Dutch translation. The story of a young generation fighting for a better world comes alive again in our own time, full of tragedy but also refreshing humour. Once again, the production promises to be a visual and theatrical experience.

The Theatre Alliance is realising this show with eye-catching partners. OPERA2DAY has quickly developed into a notable innovator within the opera field, innovative but from a love of the repertoire and genre. It delivers ‘one high-profile performance after another’, according to Theaterkrant. ‘OPERA2DAY demonstrates that there is a brave new world of opera out there which has yet to be fashioned’ wrote an English reviewer. The musical accompaniment will be provided by LUDWIG. Recordings by this ensemble were named ‘best classical album of the year’ (New York Times) and awarded a Grammy Award.

The story

The story

Who wouldn’t have wanted to be at the very first performances of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in 1791? The fabulous music, imaginative characters, and sparkling humor overwhelmed audiences at the popular theater of Emanuel Schikaneder, who, as both actor and director, played the role of Papageno himself. A year later, De Tooverfluyt also conquered the Netherlands. Now, in an effort to recapture the vibrant energy of those original performances, the Theateralliantie joins forces with OPERA2DAY—which has swiftly won the hearts of audiences—and the Grammy Award-winning ensemble LUDWIG.

This full staging of Mozart’s masterpiece is the perfect follow-up to the five-star production Amadeus, which already featured a prominent role for operatic scenes. “What a celebration!” wrote Scènes. “The most beautiful scenes are those where Mozart and his music take center stage,” said NRC, adding it was “brilliantly sung”. “The astonishingly skilled acting, Mozart’s music, and the richly layered staging are ruthless and of a tormenting beauty,” wrote Trouw. Scenes from Die Zauberflöte stole the show and sparked a longing for a full production of the work.

Theu Boermans—one of the most beloved and award-winning directors in the country—once again collaborates with musical director Hernán Schvartzman of OPERA2DAY. They were inspired by the original intentions of Mozart and Schikaneder. A similar mix of actors and singers was cast, and the libretto comes to life through a completely new Dutch translation that fires the imagination. The story of a young generation fighting for a better world is brought to life once more in our own time, filled with tragedy but also refreshing humor. Once again, this production promises to be a visual and theatrical spectacle.

The Theateralliantie has brought this production to life in collaboration with standout partners. OPERA2DAY has quickly made a name for itself as an innovator in the opera world—forward-thinking, yet grounded in a love for the repertoire and genre. According to Theaterkrant, it delivers “one groundbreaking production after another.” As one English critic put it: “OPERA2DAY demonstrates that there is a brave new world of opera out there which has yet to be fashioned.” The musical accompaniment is provided by LUDWIG, whose recordings have been named “Best Classical Album of the Year” by The New York Times and honored with a Grammy Award.
