Video opera walk Deine Winterreise: through Sept. 12 in The Hague

Starting on May 25, M31 Foundation and OPERA2DAY present a musical journey that allows us to let go of our feelings of isolation (the corona winter with all its restrictions) and turn our focus toward a new cultural beginning.

The poignant song cycle Winterreise by Franz Schubert takes on a new and captivating form as a video-opera walk through The Hague. Over approximately 3.5 hours, you follow a route past 24 locations, from Hollands Spoor to Central Station. Along the way, QR codes allow you to access film clips on your own smartphone, each featuring a song from the cycle, performed by Martijn Cornet and Shuann Chai. Every song becomes an audiovisual poem, engaging in dialogue with the city’s streets, squares, and parks.

Make sure to bring good headphones or earbuds for the best experience. In the songs, a nameless young man walks in search of balance after a lonely time of distance and alienation, with his surroundings mirroring his emotions. You literally walk alongside him, making for a deeply immersive experience—one that offers every individual traveler the comfort of unforgettable music.

The walk was freely accessible at any time of the day until at least September 12, 2021.
