Quarantine Island : Location performance on Quarantine site Heijplaat

From August 25 to 29, OPERA2DAY and O. Festival (formerly Operadagen Rotterdam) present a special site-specific performance on Quarantine Island, just outside Rotterdam. Stories and songs about pandemics—past and present, from near and far—come to life in this immersive, moving, and hopeful walking performance at a truly unique location.

As you walk across the island, you’ll be immersed in different cultures and eras. Musicians, singers, and guides take you from 14th-century Florence to Samuel Pepys’ London three centuries later. From a raw blues ballad and a heart-wrenching Turkish love song to a diary entry from plague-stricken London and a verse from Florence in the grip of the Black Death. The 1945 typhus outbreak on the South Holland islands feels strikingly recent—so recent that we can share a firsthand account in the performance. As you journey through the Quarantine Grounds, you’ll sense and understand our deep connections across time and borders. The music from all corners of the world expresses grief and mourning, but also resilience and hope for better days.
