‘Don Quixote’ ends tour in The Hague

After nearly three months and 23 performances, our tour of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha has come to an end. On Thursday 16, Friday 17, and Saturday 18 March, we gave our final performances at the Koninklijke Schouwburg in The Hague.

Miraculous and Moving

Cervantes’ novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha is one of the most renowned works in world literature. A book that has inspired for centuries—we found at least ninety operas featuring Don Quixote as the central character. Yet, almost all of these operas focus on just one or a few passages from the nearly 1000-page novel or reduce the character to a simple madman. However, when viewed as a whole, the novel proves surprisingly modern. It explores themes such as the gap between lofty dreams and harsh reality, the increasing clashes between cultures, and the search for one’s own place in a globalising world. Don Quixote may seem insane, but the question arises: does he not actively choose this role? Who is truly mad—Don Quixote, or the world around him? Time for a new opera. A story about reclaiming imagination.

Musical and Theatrical Adventurers

The New European Ensemble, together with the Italian ensemble la fonte musica, specialists in medieval music, bring Don Quixote’s universe to life. Composer Vanni Moretto weaves enchanting medieval compositions into his score to reflect Don Quixote’s fantasies. The concept and libretto are by Stefano Simone Pintor, who was previously part of the team that made Vivaldi – Dangerous Liaisons a great success. Pintor also takes on the stage direction, supported by OPERA2DAY’s fantastic team for set design, costumes, and lighting. Conductor Hernán Schvartzman leads the soloists and orchestra through the compelling tale of our magnificent Don Quixote!
