On Thursday, September 4, it finally happened: the long-awaited premiere of La R\u00e9volution de Carmen<\/em>. And what an evening it was! Extra festive, too, as all six performances are now completely sold out.<\/p>\n

A New Standard<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We thoroughly enjoyed this special premiere, as well as the heartwarming audience reactions. One visitor said: \u201cWe\u2019ve heard Tania as Carmen before \u2013 amazing! But this time it was truly exceptional.\u201d The shift in time and setting was also well received: \u201cCarmen is often such a hit show with overfamiliar melodies, which can overshadow the drama. But with the backdrop of the Paris Commune, the story became so much more exciting. I hope this becomes the new standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

We also received many compliments from the press. Tania Kross made a deep impression with her powerful portrayal of Carmen. Place de l\u2019Opera<\/em> even called her the evening\u2019s biggest surprise: \u201cShe moved me with her warm voice, which seems to come straight from her soul.\u201d Soprano Ana-Carmen Balestra also received high praise. Theaterkrant<\/em> named our Micha\u00eblle the star of the evening: \u201cDeeply moving is her aria Je dis, que rien ne m\u2019\u00e9pouvante<\/em>, in which she encourages herself to rescue Jos\u00e9 from the battlefield and guide him to his dying mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u2018Brilliant\u2019 Set<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The choir and children\u2019s choir were enthusiastically received. Opus Klassiek<\/em> wrote: \u201cThe energetically performed choral scenes, with an effectively directed children\u2019s choir, are characteristic of a colorful staging that is especially convincing in the ensemble scenes.\u201d According to Theaterkrant<\/em>, \u201cthe joy of performing shines through,\u201d and Place de l\u2019Opera<\/em> found it \u201cremarkable how fresh the choirs sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

The music was also praised. The Ghent-based B\u2019Rock Orchestra \u201cproduced a pleasantly warm sound from the orchestra pit\u201d (Theaterkrant<\/em>), with special appreciation for the horn players and their \u201cbeautiful, melancholic lines.\u201d ArtsTalk Magazine<\/em> also lauded the musical performance under the \u201cinspired direction\u201d of Hern\u00e1n Schvartzman. \u201cWhat conductor Hern\u00e1n Schvartzman brought out in terms of color from the B\u2019Rock Orchestra, playing on period instruments, sounded wonderful,\u201d wrote Trouw<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The set also made a strong impression. ArtsTalk Magazine<\/em> called it spectacular: \u201cFrom the moment we entered the theater, we were immersed in the atmosphere of Paris during the Commune, with tricolour flags, slogans, and graffiti on the walls.\u201d One of the sets was even described as \u201cbrilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inventive and Playful<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Of course, the fact that OPERA2DAY offers an entirely new perspective on this most famous opera also sparked plenty of discussion. Opinions spanned the full spectrum. The reviewer from Trouw<\/em> longed for \u201ca production where everything had remained the same.\u201d ArtsTalk Magazine<\/em> congratulated director and librettist Serge van Veggel on the \u201cstunning adaptation,\u201d executed \u201cwithout a single misstep.\u201d Theaterkrant<\/em> openly praised the initiative: \u201cWith this production, OPERA2DAY once again proves that they can breathe new life into the standard repertoire in an inventive and playful way.\u201d<\/p>\n
