Schubert in Scheveningen premiered on 25 June 2017 in Kantine Visafslag (the fish auction canteen) in The Hague

Schubert in Scheveningen was a musical and theatrical highlight of Festival Classique in June 2017. In the autumn, the production returned to the fish auction as a dinner performance. A musical and culinary experience consisting of fish, seamen, pure beauty and love at first sight.

For years OPERA2DAY has wanted to play in the characteristic Visafslag (fish auction), one of the best kept secrets of Scheveningen harbour. Each day freshly caught fish is landed here and sold at the auction. Not without reason the location was submitted to the national monument list. In June 2017 Festival Classique provided OPERA2DAY with the opportunity of realising this wish. Against this unique backdrop Schubert’s melancholic music was brought to life for an enthusiastic audience.

The fish auction is not only a great location for musical theatre. For some time now it has been a popular place under the name of Zeevlam (sea fog): pop-up dinners which were a pleasant surprise to the culinary world. The chefs and OPERA2DAY joined forces and merged the world of sailors and the sound of Schubert with amazing fish dishes into an overwhelming experience.

Schubert in Scheveningen tells a story based on Schubert’s music, which often focussed on fishermen and their melancholic loves. At sea, far from their loved ones, you can almost hear them say the words Schubert set to music: “My heart is just like the sea, having storms and ebb and flow”. Baritone Florian Just and accordionist Marieke Hopman perform Schubert’s everlasting beautiful music together with the Eliot Quartet and a vocal ensemble.

Schuibert in Scheveningen is a coproduction of OPERA2DAY, Festival Classique and Zeevlam.

Story

Fishermen are singing drinking songs on their way to the fish auction canteen. When a fisherman’s daughter walks past, one of the fishermen immediately falls in love, but he loses sight of her. The fisherman navigates between hope and despair. Then, inevitably, fate strikes: he sails away to sea, with an aching heart.
