Alone in her room, a woman has a live video chat with her ex — who will marry another woman the next day. She is desperate and makes one last attempt to mend their broken relationship. He is weak. He lies. She knows it. Inevitably, she is headed toward the loss of their relationship.
Who could have predicted the future when the French all-rounder Jean Cocteau wrote La voix humaine in 1928: a timeless, ultimate farewell letter in the form of a telephone conversation? In 1959, Francis Poulenc adapted this intense theatrical monologue into a one-act opera, which has since graced the repertoire of many companies. A few years ago, the music theatre company LEKS compagnie developed La voix humaine – Facetime, a staging that adds a whole new dimension to this classic: the individual becoming detached from society as a whole, caught in a dangerous game of ever-shifting truths. The telephone from the original was replaced by a webcam.
OPERA2DAY invited LEKS compagnie to adapt their version of La Voix Humaine to current developments in the Covid-19 crisis. The concept fit perfectly with the year of social distancing and quarantine. In this version, the prologue included the text Spuug by Jibbe Willems, specially written for the corona period commissioned by Theatergroep Oostpool for their video program Troostpool. This text about a young woman yearning for her lover was performed on stage for the first time in La Voix Humaine and Quarantine.
